Art Classes

The following art classes have been planned for the year:

  • Thursday 26 March: Where the Wild Things Grow – Still life workshop by Craig Waddell (10am-12pm, at the Art Gallery). Book here

Come and create your own masterpiece or just brush up on your sketching skills. It’s up to you! The well-known Australian contemporary artist Craig Waddell will guide you through a two-hour session of mixed media exploration; using pastel, pencil and charcoal on paper to sketch an arranged botanical still life.

  • 29 July: Chinese Calligraphy by Dr Fan Dongwang. Dr Fan Dongwang graduated from Shanghai School of Arts and Crafts with comprehensive training of traditional Chinese art forms (calligraphy, painting, sculpture and carving). Book here

2-hour workshop (no previous calligraphy and art experience necessary) to learn the practice of traditional Chinese calligraphy as the foundation of a balanced lifestyle, using simple but expressive brush stroke on rice paper to create some beautiful Chinese characters that are symbols of luck and prosperity. (10am-12pm at the Art Gallery).

Staff campus walks - every Thursday

Take a break from your screen over lunch, join your fellow colleagues and get your body moving! The weekly campus walking group is launching on Thursday, 5th March.

When? Weekly walks on a Thursday from 1:00pm - 1:30pm (starting 5th March)

Where to meet? Meet at Wally's Walk coffee cart for a 1:00pm start

What to bring? Hat, sunscreen, water bottle and ensure you wear appropriate attire (shoes, clothing)

Please note: In inclement weather the walk could be cancelled at short notice - you will be notified by email if this is the case.

How to book:

If you have any problems booking for the walks, please bring your phone to one of the walks and we will help you there.

Exercise classes: Free Yoga on Mondays and Tuesdays

The free Yoga classes are suitable for all levels. They are offered every Monday and Tuesday from 12pm-1pm at the following venues:

Monday Yoga class: Level 4 of the MUSE building (18 Wally’s Walk) in the Creative Space room just past the finance office. Just look for the signs at the top of the stairs on Level 4 directing you to the room. (You can use the bathrooms on Level 3 to change) Book your Monday class here

Tuesday Yoga class: Waterloo Road precinct. This class runs from 12pm to 1pm in the Venture Cafe. Book your Tuesday Class here

Come dressed and ready to go. The classes are capped at 50 participants. There will be a very limited number of mats available so bring your own mat if you have one.

Free Swim Tuesday and $1 coffee (Tuesdays only)

The gym is offering staff free access to the 25m and 50m swimming pools every Tuesday during Session 1, from 25 February until 30 June.

The Centre is also offering $1 coffees to staff on Tuesdays until 30 June, so grab your togs, have a swim and a coffee to go!

Free staff flu shots

The University will be offering staff free flu shots in the month of May this year. Having the flu shot has benefits for the individual, but also the general population as a whole - it reduces your risk of catching the flu, and therefore reduces the risk of the infection spreading to other people.

‘Pop-Up’ exercise classes

Have you wanted to try some of the exercise classes offered by the Macquarie Sport and Aquatic Centre and never got around to it? Here is a taster for you and if you enjoy the class, why not sign up for a Staff Pass so you can attend more sessions?

The first pop-up class in the month is free and thereafter your require a staff pass. All ‘Pop-Up’ classes will be held on a Wednesday, from 12.15pm, at 29 Wally’s Walk – Level 1, Room 145 Drama Room. Please arrive 10 mins early.

Staff Visit Pass: The Sport and Aquatic Centre is offering staff a 10-visit pass for $90 or 5 visits for $50, giving you the flexibility to participate in classes if you’re not quite ready to commit to a gym membership. You can purchase the Staff Visit Pass at the ‘Pop-up’ Classes or the Sports and Aquatics Centre.

  • Body Balance - yoga based class which also embraces elements of Tai Chi and pilates
  • Zumba - cardio dance workout
  • CX Worx - 30-minute core-training workout that uses your body weight, resistance training and weights to tighten and tone
  • Les Mills Barre - ballet-inspired moves with elements of pilate, dance, yoga and strength training

Sustainability activities and walks on campus

  • Campus nature walks

These lunchtime walks led by Samantha Newton (Arboretum Officer) will showcase different parts of the campus. Depending on the season, tours will include teaching gardens, hidden courtyards, native forests, and a chance to spot some wildlife.

Meet: at the corner of Wally’s Walk and Sir Christopher Ondaatje Way

  • Bush regeneration

College Creek is a bush regeneration target area. We work to remove Madeira Vine from the surrounds of the creek.

Meet: Research Park Drive, near the driveway to the student housing.

What to bring: gardening clothes and closed shoes, water. Gloves and tools supplied

Wellbeing month – coming soon in September!

Keep a look out for information regarding our annual wellbeing month which will take place in September. It will incorporate a lot of the above and so much more. We have some new and exciting activities and events planned for this year… so watch this space!
