Travel insurance

Travel insurance

If you are travelling on University approved trips you may need the protection of our travel insurance.

What do I need to know?

Domestic/local

For domestic travel you are covered by Medicare if you are an Australian citizen. Non-Australian citizens are covered by their current insurance policy (OSHC).

International travel

If you are going on a University approved international trip for less than six months, travel insurance is provided by the University, except when the travel is to a sanctioned country and approval for travel to DFAT 3+ countries has been sought. If your trip is over six months, other forms of insurance is required. Should you wish to discuss insurance with our insurance manager, email us at insurance.mq@mq.edu.au

What else do I need insurance for?

You will need to contact the insurance manager if you are:

  • taking equipment that has a value of over $50K
  • undertaking high-risk activities
  • travelling to DFAT 3/4 countries and sanctioned regions
  • travelling to Antarctica.

If you are not sure, email us.

Am I covered if I take holiday time while on University business?

Staff

Yes, if it is less than seven days of the entire trip. More than seven days of the entire trip or greater than the number of University days, you will need to arrange for your own private insurance for those days of your trip.

If you have a pre-existing condition

If you have a pre-existing condition, we need a few extra details to ensure you have a safe and successful trip:

  • tell us about your pre-existing medical condition so we can assist in pre-departure planning
  • provide a letter from your treating doctor, stating your fitness to travel.

If you are unsure, ask us at traveladvice@mq.edu.au

Travelling with family members?

Accompanying spouse, partner or dependant will normally be covered, however, formal approval is required prior to departure. Please contact us at insurance.mq@mq.edu.au

If I need to make an insurance claim?

Claims can be made for any personal or University costs, or losses when they are eligible for reimbursement under the travel insurance policy. You need to complete the claim form (PDF).
