Central Courtyard Precinct

The Central Courtyard Precinct will create a new centrepiece for the University and will include collaborative and innovative spaces for students, staff and the local community to gather and connect. There are six stages to this project with each stage supporting the others.

Stage 1 of the Central Courtyard Precinct is the Campus Common, an exciting new mix of contemporary food, beverage, event and social options, set in an innovative recreational indoor/outdoor space to cater for the University’s staff and students.

The area is inspired by the Re:START container mall brand made famous by Christchurch after the devastating earthquake in 2011. It is being created so the current Campus Hub can be closed for a period of extensive redevelopment.

Campus Common is scheduled to open on 6 November.

Stage 2 – the Macquarie Active Zone Experience or MAZE – created a new hub for student clubs and societies, as well as new additions including:

  • New Student HQ
  • New Student Group Collaboration Zone with bookable spaces
  • New home for Queer Space and Women’s Room
  • Five dedicated event spaces with improved AV facilities
  • Locker relocation

Stage 3 prepares the Central Courtyard for the start of other stages. These works will allow the University to make room for an innovative new teaching and learning building with food and beverage offerings, as well as the first two of five student housing buildings to create a campus which is better suited for Macquarie’s growth.

Information on the final three stages will be shared as the project progresses.
