Transitions and departures
There are a few things to consider when you decide to leave Macquarie – and some things to do before you go.
It starts with a conversation with your manager to discuss your intentions. The Guide to Leaving Macquarie (PDF) will help you to cover all the things to do before your last day.
Following a discussion with your manager, confirm your decision in writing to your manager and include your required notice period as outlined in your letter of offer. If you are unsure of this, please contact your HR client services team. It may be possible to agree on a shorter notice period. Approval for these arrangements need to be confirmed by your manager.
If you are thinking about retiring and would like to explore some flexibility to help with the transition, speak with your manager and your HR client services team to discuss available options.
When retiring it is also important to think about your superannuation. Talk with your superannuation fund and consider seeking independent financial advice. Contact State Super on 1300 130 096 or UniSuper on 1800 331 685, or book an appointment with our on-campus UniSuper consultant online.
End of contract
If your fixed-term contract is coming to an end and the University is not able to offer you further employment, you will be notified of this in accordance with the relevant Enterprise Agreement.
You may be eligible for a severance payment. For more information on severance pay and eligibility, refer to the relevant Enterprise Agreement under ‘Types of Employment’ or contact your HR representative.
After your last day
You will maintain access to your payment summaries via HR Online for two years after your last day. You will need to access these when completing your next tax return. Please make a note of your OneID and password so you won't have trouble accessing this in the future.
You will maintain access to your Macquarie University email account three months after your last day. After three months you will not be able to access your Macquarie email account.
As a former staff member you are eligible for free membership to Macquarie University Library which will allow you to retain borrowing rights (16-week loans) and access to online databases whilst on campus. Apply for your membership now.
Share your Macquarie story
We would love to hear about your experience at Macquarie University. To tell us your story, complete our employee exit survey. The survey is anonymous and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. You will be sent a link to the survey prior to your departure.
Alternatively, get in touch with your HR client services team to arrange a confidential discussion. Your stories will inform strategies to improve the Macquarie experience for current and future staff.
Academic staff members who would like to stay connected with the University should speak to their Head of Department about applying for an honorary academic title. Staff who meet the eligibility criteria may also consider applying for the prestigious title of Macquarie University Emeritus Professor. See the Honorary Academic Titles policy and procedure and Award of Emeritus Professor policy for more information.
