What is peer review of learning and teaching?

PEER project logoPeer review of learning and teaching provides both the reviewee and the reviewer with the opportunity to mutually enhance the quality of their teaching practices. It is important to note that teaching is not narrowly seen as classroom performance. Teaching also encompasses online interactions, teaching-related activities outside the classroom, such as revision of teaching materials, development of units, writing of assessment task, mapping of programs to graduate capabilities, and all other aspects of learning and teaching that impact the student learning experience. For further information please refer to the What is to be reviewed? [PDF - 191k] document.

The PEER model: process, culture and structure, with communication in the centrePeer review of learning and teaching is a cyclical, iterative and reciprocal process. When engaging in this process, both the reviewee and the reviewer consider and negotiate a range of factors, such as the purpose for the review, who should be involved, the focus and scope of the review, the manner in which feedback is provided, whether documenting and reporting will take place, who will have ownership of the documentation, who will be notified when the review has taken place and many other factors. For further information please refer to PEER Review resources.

Communication plays a crucial role in the peer review of learning and teaching. It underpins the engagement in peer review and the institutional context in which it occurs.
