Higher degree research
Recognising changing workforce expectations that people will have multiple careers within a lifetime, Macquarie provides postgraduate coursework and research programs that offer options for new pathways.
Further, our PhD and research degree pathways are both distinctive and world-recognised.
With global alignment, we offer a two-year full-time Master of Research (MRes) that replaces most honours as the main pathway to a Doctor of Philosophy(PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil).
Our global-standing profile for higher degree research (HDR) attracts candidates of the highest potential who we provide with outstanding supervision, outstanding mentoring and an outstanding placement within one of our areas of research strength.

Cotutelle and joint PhD
Macquarie University has been participating in cotutelle degree programs since 1999. These became a formal component of our research strategy in 2007, and again in 2015.
The aim is to establish deep, continuing relationships with international research universities through the joint research candidate supervision.
To date, we have had over 270 cotutelle and joint PhD candidates with more than 110 universities from over 30 countries, led by China, Germany and France.
The cotutelle and joint PhD schemes are open to both international and domestic PhD candidates and scholarship and travel funds are provided to eligible candidates. This funding is in addition to the existing Macquarie University Research Training Program scholarship scheme (MQRTP) and Macquarie University International Training Program scholarship (IRTP) funding.
