Join or copy unit guides

Join or copy unit guides

Joining unit guides allows you to write a single unit guide and use it for multiple units. For instance, if you have ‘Day’ and ‘Evening’ versions of your unit you can create the same unit guide for both versions. If your two offerings are almost the same but not identical, you should copy unit guides instead.

Copying unit guides will be useful if:

  • a unit has been run before and the unit guide only needs some updates to bring it up-to-date.
  • you have two offerings of a unit that are almost the same, but not quite.
  • the unit code has changed.

Joining

When should I join unit guides?

"Joining" unit offerings is like linking them together so that you can work on them both at the same time. It allows you to write a single unit guide and use it for multiple offerings, for instance if you have Day and Evening versions of your unit and they have the same unit guide. Students can still search for and view either offering, but the information that is shown will be exactly the same (except for the offering code). If your two offerings are almost the same but not identical, you should use copying unit guides instead.

Offerings can only be joined if they have the same unit code and are in the same academic year. For example ‘COMP115 - Introduction to Computer Science S1 Day’ could join with ‘COMP115 - Introduction to Computer Science S1 Evening’.

The best time to join offerings is before you've started doing any work on your unit guides. The main unit selected is the content that will take precedence when you join. So if you have content in one unit, make sure you are looking at that unit first when you join.

Note: You must be the assigned Unit convenor of all units involved to join them.

How to join two or more offerings of a unit

  1. Log into iTeach
  2. Click on My unit guides.
  3. Click Edit on the unit you wish to be the main unit in the two or more units you wish to join.
  4. Click on Join unit guides.
  5. Tick the unit that you want to join to your main unit.
  6. Click Update.

  7. A message will appear at the top of the page advising that the units have been successfully joined.

  8. You can see under the Offering column that it now displays both offerings together.

  9. Click Edit to update the unit.

Un-joining

If you have joined two offerings by mistake, you can un-join them by clicking on Edit next to the unit and click on the Join unit guides icon. This takes you to the Join Unit guide screen and you need to un-tick the joined offering and click Update.

You can only un-join a unit guide if it is unpublished and unapproved. If it has been submitted for approval you will need to withdraw it. Once the unit guides have been un-joined, the un-joined offering will go back to whatever content it contained before it was joined. If your guides are going to be similar, you might want to copy the guide for one offering to the other offering, then make the changes you need.

Copying

When should I copy a unit guide?

iTeach allows you to copy all the content from an existing unit guide into another. This may be useful if:

  1. a unit has been run before and the unit guide only needs some updates to bring it up-to-date.
  2. you have two offerings of a unit that are almost the same, but not quite.
  3. the unit code has changed.

You can copy from any existing unit guide, even if the unit code is different. Exceptions: You cannot copy between undergraduate and postgraduate units. This is because they have different sets of Graduate Capabilities. You also cannot copy a blank unit into your unit (i.e. you can’t erase your unit content by doing this).

If you want to join two offerings of the same unit, for example Day and Evening offerings, where the content is exactly the same, then you should join them instead of copying them.

What Information gets copied?

All unit guide sections will be copied, except for the Unit code, Unit name and the following details, which are found in the General information section of a unit guide; Credit points, Prerequisites, Corequisites and Unit description.
