Opened in 2011, the Library building (C3C) was designed and built with sustainability at the forefront. The green design and construction was aimed at minimising the substantial impact our campus buildings have on the natural environment, while increasing the quality of life and wellbeing for the building’s occupants.

Sustainable features of the building include:
- Automatic Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) (link to below)
- Low energy use intensity
- Low water use intensity
- A 278,000 litre rainwater tank which captures water as it is filtered over the green roof. This water is used for irrigation and to flush toilets
- Green roof: which is covered in lawn and landscaped with Australian native plants
- High Indoor environmental quality: paints, sealants, carpets and adhesives with low to no volatile organic compounds were used throughout the building
Automatic Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS)
By using the ASRS, the University was able to reduce the overall size of the library by over 11,000 square meters, which equates to around 42 tennis courts. The result is that we provide services to less space, resulting in savings of over a million kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy per year.
The ASRS is essentially a giant (5 storey) vending machine where over 80% of the Library’s book collection is stored. It has 4 cranes which collect book boxes that have been requested via the online request system.
