A lot of the pages on our website show things like contact information and quick links in a box in the right-hand column. Learn how you can use right-columns to display all sorts of different information quickly and easily.
When you create a new page in Squiz Matrix, a folder called Right Column is automatically created. You can use this folder to store and display information on your page such as contact details, links, buttons and more. These snippets of information are known as widgets. The online guide has instructions on how to create many types of right column widgets. In this article, we'll walk you through creating a flexible content container for the right column.
How to do it
Here's an example of a page with no right-hand column:
The first thing you need to do is go to the metadata screen for the page where you want to display right column content. Scroll right to the very bottom of the page, and under the 'Page' heading you will see some checkboxes. Uncheck the 'use default' checkbox, and check the 'Show right hand content' box. Make sure you keep the 'Show left hand content' box checked or you will lose your left-hand navigation!
Save your changes.
Adding the widgets
Open the asset finder and navigate to the Right Column that belongs to your page. Click on the folder and choose the 'select' button:
Adding some content to the right column
Now create a new data record. Click New to open the asset creation wizard, then from the 'other' section, select Data Record.:
Give the data record a name and make sure that 'show in menu' is set to Yes. Make sure that you select the Right Column folder as the location for this data record. Click Create.
Now find your new data record in the asset finder and select it:
Navigate to the metadata screen for your data record. At the top of the screen, you can choose what kind of widget this is going to be: In this case, it's going to be a flexible content box. You can add all sorts of content to this type of right column widget. All you have to do is untick 'use default' and select 'Flexible content box' from the dropdown menu.
Customising your content
While you're still in the metadata screen, scroll down to the 'Flexible content box' section. Here you'll be able to add anything you like. Uncheck the 'Use default' option, and delete the dummy content that's already there.
For this example, we're just going to add a logo with some pirate text and a link. You'll notice that as soon as you start to add content to the flexible content box, a wysiwyg editor will appear at the top of the page. You can use it to format your text, add headings, insert images and all the other things you can do with a normal content container.
Save all your changes.
And here is the final page with the new right-hand column:
Did something go wrong?
If you have created your new data record but it's not showing on the page, here are some things to check:
- Did you make sure that you set 'show in menu' to YES when you created the data record?
- Is the right column published or is it still under construction?
- Double check that you enabled right column content in your page's metadata screen.
