Insurance

Insurance

The University’s insurance program involves the proactive management and mitigation of known insurable risk events and the purchase of insurance policies. We strive to help you prevent loss events, irrespective of the degree of insurance cover that we purchase.

How we can help you

To assist you in understanding and preventing a loss and to get the best response from the insurance program, we offer the following:

  • clarity over the insurance requirements when engaging with third parties and partners
  • confirmation of the cover for medical and clinical trial activities
  • confirmation of corporate level cover for the University’s operations and alliances, eg becoming a director of an affiliated organisation
  • provide support and guidance for you prior, during and on your return from travel
  • confirmation of and purchase of the right cover for your business-related activities and engagements, including use and transport of equipment
  • offer information seminars and fact sheets
  • management of all claims on your behalf
  • maintenance of a working relationship with insurers so that the cover meets our needs and responds optimally.

Areas of coverage:

Property and assets

Property

What is it?

Property Protection provides cover for material loss of assets (which includes buildings and their content, equipment, infrastructure and accidental failure events). The cover extends to claims for loss of revenue, increased cost of working, loss of rental income and additional expenses resulting from interruption or interference with business.

What do you need to know?

Where the University sustains any physical or asset loss or damage, report it through Risk Online Active Reporting (ROAR) so that we can manage the claim and seek cost reimbursement or replacement. Refer to our property insurables fact sheet.

Motor vehicle

The University only insures its fleet of motor vehicles under Comprehensive Cover. The University’s Motor Fleet does not provide any insurance to people who use their own vehicles on behalf of the University.

Should an accident or damage occur to the vehicle, your department or office will be required to pay the first $500 of the claim cost.

The University cover does not include:

  • use of privately owned vehicles
  • damage to private vehicles on campus
  • hire of rental vehicles.

When hiring rental vehicles, it is essential that only full license holders drive the vehicle, otherwise the rental insurance cover is negated and that additional insurance is taken out as a precautionary measure.

Note that the University fleet policy does not cover the hire of rental vehicles.

Transport of goods and equipment

This cover is known as Marine Cargo and it provides protection for any losses relating to property in transit, such as:

  • transporting field research equipment in the field
  • staff relocations for work/university purposes.

Travel and personal injury

About travel and personal injury cover

If you are travelling on University approved trips, you, your team and the equipment you take need the protection of travel insurance. Note the university does not cover personal leisure activities that are not incidental to the University’s purpose of travel.

When a person is injured in the course of their work (staff) or studies (students) the University insurance program has been designed to respond. Where the injury is work-related and you are a staff member you need to know what to do if you have been injured at work.

Where the injury is related to your participation in a course of study, Personal Accident insurance will cover enrolled students undertaking:

Academic activities

  • related to a University approved course
  • all other associated activities related to the approved course which are authorised by the University, including travel
  • volunteer activities organised or authorised by and/or under the control of the University
  • PACE (refer to the PACE Insurance Information).

 Non–academic activities

  • such as sporting or other sub-club activities
  • pursuits sponsored by the University.

Note: coverage doesn’t include daily travel to and from the staff/students’ normal place of study and residence, unless stated.

This policy does not replace Medicare or cover Medicare-accepted medical expenses.

International students are covered by OSCH policy except when on home soil.

Professional indemnity – medical and allied health professionals

Professional indemnity cover for practitioners

Professional indemnity cover protects medical and allied health professionals from any adverse events arising from the provision of medical care. It provides claims and legal support and manages costs arising from a claim. The Medical Registration Board requires medical practitioners (MBBS qualified and above) to hold their own MDO medical indemnity insurance, the University has worked closely with a PI provider to support International Medical Graduates (IMG) to secure the correct level of coverage and also to facilitate the process for practitioners to secure their cover.

Should you have any queries, contact us at insurance.mq@mq.edu.au

Medical malpractice

Medical malpractice cover protects both the practitioners and the University from acts, errors or omission in the provision of health care services that result in financial loss, bodily injury and or property damage.

Clinical trials

Clinical trials by their very nature need specific insurance coverage. To cover your trial, we require the appropriate ethics approval and clarity regarding the nature of the trial and participant’s profiles to secure and confirm the cover. Please contact us at insurance@mq.edu.au to assist you to determine the best coverage for your trial.

Management

Professional indemnity

Professional liability (indemnity) protects the University for legal liability to pay damages as a result of a claim made against the University and/or a protected person arising out of any negligent act, error omission in the conduct of the University’s professional business (breach of professional duty resulting in a financial loss to a client of the University).

A professional duty exists particularly in connection to teaching, consulting work and research.

Cover extends to unintentional defamation, infringement of rights of intellectual property and breach of confidentiality.

The range of people who are "protected persons" under professional liability insurance are the same as those mentioned in the section on public liability (see above).

It should be noted that the University normally will not agree to provide professional liability insurance to consultants (including sole traders) who carry on a professional business.

The scope of the cover is worldwide: however, claims brought in North America (ie the USA and/or Canada) are excluded.

Management, directors and officers Liability

The policy offers protection for officers for legal liability arising out of their conduct as a director or an officer.

Cyber liability insurance

This insurance is for the protection relating to a cyber loss event and/or the costs involved for the event.

Environmental liability

Protection for the costs and remediation relating to an environmental pollution event.
