Recent success stories

  • Professor Mark Taylor and his team have received an Olympus Research Partnership Award for the Macquarie University Vegesafe program. Vegesafe is a globally leading citizen science program that analyses soil samples from participant's gardens. To date the program has assisted nearly 3000 Australian homes.
  • Dr Simon Clulow (Department of Biological Sciences), Dr Noushin Nasiri (School of Engineering), Dr Chris Reid (Department of Biological Sciences) and Associate Professor Ronika Power (Department of Ancient History) have been honoured as 2019 NSW Tall Poppies. The Tall Poppy Campaign recognises the achievements of Australian scientists through the prestigious annual Young Tall Poppy Science Awards. Tall Poppy winners undertake activities to promote interest in science among school students and teachers, and broaden the understanding and appreciation of science in the wider community
  • Professor Ray Laurence and Associate Professor Ronika Power, from Macquarie University’s Department of Ancient History, have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society of NSW
  • Professor Wendy Rogers, has received NHMRC Ethics Award. NHMRC’s Ethics Award recognises outstanding Australians for their contributions to high ethical standards in health and medical research. Nominees are judged on the significance of their contribution supporting high ethical standards in Australia in health and/or health and medical research, including innovation in ethical policy formulation, leadership in the formulation of ethical standards and/or services above and beyond the normal requirement of Human Research Ethics Committee or Committee membership. Professor Rogers was supported by an NHMRC Sidney Sax Fellowship early in her research into the ethics of evidence-based medicine. In 2009, she took up the position of Professor of Clinical Ethics at Macquarie University, where she was awarded an ARC Future Fellowship for research into the philosophical and ethical issues raised by over diagnosis. Professor Rogers has made major contributions in the analysis of and responses to ethical issues in evidence-based medicine, public health, organ donation, biomedical research, surgical innovation, and over diagnosis.

Four researchers from the Faculty of Science and Engineering have been named in Science and Technology Australia's 2019 Superstars of STEM:

  • Dr Lizzy Lowe, an urban ecologist, passionate about working with local communities to improve the health of our cities with a particular passion for raising the public profile of under-appreciated animals such as spiders, and encouraging engagement with nature in cities.
  • Dr Devika Kamath, an astrophysicist recognised for her work on observational studies of dying stars and their implications on the origin of elements in the universe
  • Dr Kate Selway, an Earth scientist currently focussed on understanding why plate tectonics happens, knowing where to explore for ore deposits, and improving measurements of ice loss from ice sheets
  • Dr Georgia Ward-Fear, a conservation scientist, reptile biologist and explorer. Georgia developed ‘The Cane Toad Coalition’ (2017), a strategic partnership between prominent conservation organisations, Indigenous NGOs and cultural groups, State governments and regional stakeholders; never before had these organisations allied in this way. Georgia leads the coalition, with the ambitious task of delivering the largest and most innovative strategy for cane toad mitigation to date; it’s working.

Congratulations to our newly elected fellows:

Dr Simon Gross from the Department of Physics and Astronomy has been awarded a NSW Young Tall Poppy Science Award for his work with laser and microchip technology. Young Tall Poppy Awards recognise outstanding early career researchers who are passionate about communicating their science and engaging with the community. Read more about Simon's win and research here.

Macquarie's Modular Photonics team have received an Australian Engineering Excellence Award for their ground-breaking glass microchip technology, which can make data transfer speeds in optical fibre networks up to 100 times faster.

Dr Tom Murray from the Department of Media, Music Communication and Cultural Studies, has been shortlisted for the Digital History Prize in the prestigious NSW Premier’s History Prize awards. Tom is recognised for his skills as both a scholar and accomplished producer of history in the media for his documentary The Skin of Others: when Douglas Grant met Henry Lawson.

Associate Professor Antonio Di Ieva from the Department of Clinical Medicine has received the prestigious John Mitchell Crouch Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. The Fellowship is awarded to an individual who is making an outstanding contribution to the advancement of surgery or to fundamental scientific research in the field in which they are now actively working. Antonio plans to use the funding to set up the first Computational Neurosurgery Lab in Australia. It will enable advanced computational modelling, which will be used to quantify neurological and neurosurgical diseases and aims to find new diagnostic, prognostic and potentially therapeutic image markers.

Associate Professor Anina Rich is one of 11 researchers world-wide to be elected to the Executive Committee of the Global Young Academy from May 2018 - May 2019. GYA membership is limited to 200 early career researchers from nearly 60 countries who share a passion about the role of science in creating a better world. In her role on the Executive Committee A/Prof Rich will represent the GYA and engage with academic and scientific leaders, government ministers and funding bodies world-wide.
