Did you know that Dr Peter Humburg runs weekly drop-ins in each Department where you can seek help with all things statistics-related.  Weekly session times and locations are as follows: Cognitive Sciences in AHH 3.716: Mondays 1 - 3 pm; Educational Studies in 29WW 207: 9 - 11 am; Linguistics in 12SW 558: Wednesdays 1 - 3 pm; and Psychology in 4FW 527:  Thursdays 1 - 3 pm.
Fortnightly on Thursdays: starting 23rd MayHearing Strategy 2030: Venture Café fortnightly from 3:00 - 4:30 pmA fortnightly meeting, from 3:00 - 4:30pm on Thursdays starting from 23 May 2019, has been set up at the Venture Cafe (58 Waterloo Road) by those involved with the Hearing Strategy 2030. These meetings have been established to bring together those who are interested across the broad sweep of hearing and hear-related themes, as well as supporting Venture Cafe. There is an MQ bus to the Venture Cafe that leaves from in front of the library, should you require transport. If you are interested in being involved, please feel free to attend and also email Sally Piper so that you can be added to the email list.
Wednesday 25 SeptemberECR Speed Mentoring Event: Meet Faculty Mentors And Navigate Your Career HurdlesA speed mentoring event will be held on Wednesday 25 September 2019 from 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm in the Rec Room (Room 3.202) on Level 3 of the Australian Hearing Hub. ECRs who would like general advice or specific guidance in any research or career related area will be paired with two mentees in a 20 minute session to discuss and plan an approach, with drinks and nibbles being available throughout the session. Thursday 19 SeptemberAHH Seminar: Outcomes of Long-term Collaborative ResearchThis seminar, presented by Bob Cowan (CEO of the HEARing CRC) will e HEARing CRC Experience and Legacy, will provide some insights into outcomes and achievements made possible through effective collaboration across multiple organizations and disciplines, with a focus on innovation in medical technology, clinical services, and translation of outcomes into practice.  This seminar is taking place from 1-2:30pm, in the Australian Hearing Hub, Level 1, Lecture Theatre. Wednesday 18 September Faculty Writing "Rapid Retreat" on ARC DECRAs and other Major Grants: Register Your InterestA writing retreat will be held on Wednesday 18 September from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at MQ City Campus (Level 24 of Angel Place, 123 Pitt Street, Sydney). This one-day off-campus workshop will provide writing time, support and information for colleagues preparing submissions for the ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) scheme, as well as other major schemes. However, anyone who is preparing a grant and would benefit from dedicated writing time is welcome to attend. Places are limited so please complete the registration form as soon as possible to secure a place.

Tuesday 27 AugustHow to Prepare for an Early Career Research Fellowship: Track Record Building During Your PhDThis workshop, held from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm in Room 801 (Level 8) of 12 Wally's Walk, is targeted at current PhD candidates and will provide information and advice on how to apply for an ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award and a NHMRC Investigator Grant. Dr Ross Hill and Courtney Bendall from Research Services will discuss scheme objectives, selection criteria, eligibility, application process and past success rates for both schemes, as well as provide guidance on what type of track record applicants will need to be competitive.

Thursday 15 AugustRehabilitation and Dementia – Current Evidence And Implementation AspirationsPeople with dementia receive almost no rehabilitation for their dementia and are less likely to receive rehabilitation for other conditions. People with dementia have been demanding rehabilitation arguing that they have a human right to treatment.  This talk, presented by Associate Professor Lee-Fay Low from the University of Sydney and chaired by Dr Joyce Siette from the Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University, will provide an overview of the growing body of evidence for a range of rehabilitative therapies and their outcomes for people with dementia. These include exercise, brain training, occupational therapy, and psychological therapies. Opportunities for implementation of rehabilitation for people with dementia within the Australian health and aged care systems will be discussed, as will barriers to implementation including stigma, workforce and costs. This talk will be held from 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm in the Seminar Room on Level 1 of 75 Talavera Road, Macquarie University. Admission is free but event organisers ask that you register at this link. Monday 12 AugustRehabilitation and Dementia – Current Evidence And Implementation AspirationsThis talk, presented by Professor Bryan Gick, University of British Columbia and hosted by Dr Mike Proctor from the Centre for Language Sciences (CLaS) at Macquarie University, will review over a decade of research from the Gick research group which has studied how the somatosenses may play distinct roles in speech perception, and how they can work together with other modalities to facilitate speech perception for a range of populations. The presentation will be held from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm in Room 3.610 on Level 3 of the Australian Hearing Hub.
Thursday 8 AugustThe Science Of HoardingWhat is hoarding disorder, why does it develop and how can it be treated? Join Associate Professor Melissa Norberg, the Deputy Director for the Centre of Emotional Health at Macquarie University, to learn why we can be motivated to acquire possessions we do not need. This presentation will be held from 11:00 am - 12:00 noon at the Metcalfe Auditorium on the Ground Floor of the State Library of New South Wales. This event is part of Inspiring Australia’s Talking Science series as part of Sydney Science Festival in National Science Week. Tuesday 21 MayCEPET Colloquium: Sensorimotor Learning in Complex EnvironmentsThe colloquium, presented by Dr David Kaplan from Macquarie University and hosted by the Centre for Elite Performance, Expertise, and Training (CEPET), will discuss recent research by Dr Kaplan and colleagues. It will cover recent work on Bayesian integration during visuomotor learning in noisy task environments as well as complex sensorimotor challenges facing surgeons learning and performing minimally invasive surgery.

Friday 10 MayAHH Seminar: Hearing Loss, Aging, and Public HealthThis seminar will be presented by Professor Frank Lin, Director of the Cochlear Center for Hearing and Public Health and a Professor of Otolaryngology, Medicine, Mental Health, and Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins. Professor Lin's presentation will examine research over the past several years that has demonstrated the broad implications of hearing loss for the health and functioning of older adults, particularly with respect to cognitive functioning, brain aging, and dementia. Professor Lin will be presenting the same presentation twice in the Australian Hearing Hub, Level 1, Lecture Theatre, once at 9-10 am and then again at 1-2pm.

15 August 2019Internal Deadlines for External Research Funding ApplicationsResearch Services have informed Faculty Research Offices that they will be implementing an internal deadline for all external miscellaneous grants. This will come into effect on 7 October and is designed to allow the central team ample time to undertake relevant checks, obtain sign offs and submit to the funding body on behalf of the applicant. The FRO will ensure that these timeframes are built into the deadlines outlined in this newsletter.  Therefore please can we request that you submit as per the instructions outlined in the newsletter to ensure no difficulties arise.
15 August 2019Dr Erin Semon appointed as new Pre-Award Team Manager.The Faculty congratulates Dr Erin Semon on her appointment as Manager of the Pre Award Team in Research Services following Julian Zipparo’s departure. Erin will commence her role in Research Services on Monday 7 October 2019.
15 August 2019Developing your research outputs and track record narrative: one-on-one sessions availableThe MQ Library now offers a bespoke service to help researchers with developing a narrative around their track record and research outputs for scheme applications. Specifically, the library can build a report - encompassing metrics from platforms such as Web of Science, SciVal, Scopus and AltMetrics - for an individual researcher and then meet with that researcher to discuss how they should interpret the report. The service allows researchers to develop a complimentary narrative around their research performance using relevant metrics. If you are interested in this service, please contact Access & Advisory Services Librarians Heather Cooper and Grai Calvey ( It is imperative that you make contact early (and not just before a grant is due) as it may take a few weeks to organise the service.

31 July 2019New Faculty Research Centres AnnouncedThe Faculty is delighted to announce the establishment of two new Faculty Research Centres - The Faculty of Human Sciences Multilingualism Research Centre, directed by Professor Philip Benson (Linguistics), and The Faculty of Human Sciences Centre for Research in Numeracy Development and Learning, directed by Professor Rebecca Bull (Educational Studies). A merger of the Faculty’s Centre for Scaffolding the Ageing Mind and the Department of Psychology’s Ageing Interest Group has also led to the creation of a new larger enterprise titled The Faculty of Human Sciences Research Centre in Ageing, Cognition and Wellbeing, which will be directed by Professor Viv Wuthrich (Psychology) and co-directed by Dr Celia Harris (Cognitive Science) and Dr Carly Johnco (Psychology). You will hear more about these Research Centres in coming weeks and months, and we look forward to updating you on exciting new opportunities that arise from these important, emerging research collectives.

31 July 2019New MQ Podcast Series Exploring How To Relate To FailureWhat does the experience of failing feel like? What makes a failure meaningful? Can failure be an end in itself? What goes on in the moments of doubt and uncertainty, and what allows one to lean into the discomfort of not knowing the answer or how to proceed? As part of the 2019 ‘Make your Mark at Macquarie’ leadership initiative, Dr Florence Chiew, Social Science Advisor, Higher Degree Research Learning Skills at Macquarie University, is developing a podcast series called Failing Allowed. The podcast will explore how academics, researchers, university staff and students relate to failure in their work. Through a series of interviews and panel discussions, the podcast will seek out surprising and thought-provoking stories about how people navigate the ‘creative mess’ of their day-to-day routines. Dr Chiew would be very grateful for recommendations of people who might be willing to speak candidly about their experiences of failure – if you, or anyone you know, might be interested in contributing to this project please email Dr Florence Chiew ( directly.
9 May 2019Sign up to MQ's Supervision Enhancement ProgramThis program aims to enhance the quality of the supervisor-student relationship and provide HDR candidates with outstanding supervisory expertise and mentoring. The program - convened by Associate Professor Bill Ashraf in the Office of PVC HDR Training and Partnerships – combines a compulsory orientation unit for supervisors with an optional HDR Supervision Fellowship stream. For those interested in submitting a fellowship 'claim' please note that you must first have completed HDR Supervision Orientation (2019) and obtained a brief email of support to take part in the program from your supervisor/line manager. If you are a casual employee, make sure your supervisor/line manager approves budget for you to be paid whilst receiving this training. Wednesday 27 March ERA 2018 Outcomes announcedAll of our Faculty’s disciplines were rated at or above world standard at the two digit level across Language, Communication and Culture (20), Education (13), and Psychology and Cognitive Science (17). Furthermore, all of our subdisciplines were also rated at or above world standard at the four digit level, including in Linguistics (2004), Education Systems (1301), Curriculum and Pedagogy (1302), Specialist Studies in Education (1303), and Psychology (1701). This is an exceptional performance and highlights our Faculty’s strengths as well as the value of our ongoing strategic investments in core areas of expertise and potential.
Tuesday 26 March  Inspiring Australia is looking for STEM researchers to participate in a library talkInspiring Australia are recruiting researchers at all levels of their careers and across all of the STEM disciplines to present short talks and demonstrations in a local library, in particular during National Science Week this August. Library presentations are highly valued by community members and participation is a great way for researchers to develop strong public presentation skills. Monday 25 MarchReview of the Science and Research Priorities as they apply to the NCGPAt the end of last year, the Minister for Education also announced a review of the 2015 Science and Research Priorities as they apply to the National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP). This year the newly established review panel will consider: 1)  how the priorities are used and whether their structure appropriately supports the NCGP process, 2) how the ARC’s use of the priorities relates to government science, research and innovation strategies, 3) how the ARC’s use of the priorities compares to other Commonwealth research funding programs, 4) the areas of strategic priority that have been identified by Australia’s Learned Academies, and 5) the areas in which Australia exhibits research strength, or which present opportunities to establish Australia as a world leader in research as identified by the ARC’s Excellence in Research for Australia report. The panel will report their findings at the end of July 2019.
Monday 18 MarchCall for Abstracts: 8th Annual NHMRC Symposium on Research Translation The 8th Annual NHMRC Symposium on Research Translation will run from 19-20 November 2019. The theme this year is "Research Translation in the digital age: harnessing the power of data and analytical technologies". Call for abstracts will open at the end of March. Wednesday 13 MarchANZSRC ReviewThe ARC, ABS, Statistics New Zealand and the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment are undertaking a joint review of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC). Public consultation is now open and further information can be found on the ARC’s website. The University will be submitting an institutional response in the next few months. Therefore, if you would like to respond to the consultation, please speak with the Deputy Head, Research within your Department before 16 April.
Tuesday 12 MarchARC Deal with Europe for DECRAs

The ARC has signed a new Implementing Arrangement with the European Research Council (ERC) to commence in late 2019, which is designed to provide opportunities for ARCfunded early career researchers (DECRA fellows) from Australia to pursue research collaborations with European researchers supported through a relevant ERC grant. Further information will be provided closer to the date, but the agreement is currently available as a pdf.

Research Professional Fingerprinting

Fingerprints, a new feature recently released by *Research Professional, provides researchers with specific and targeted funding alerts based on their PURE profile. If you are an MQ researcher, a Fingerprint profile has already been created for you, which can be accessed and edited by logging into your *Research Professional account at If you don’t have an account, you can register with your Macquarie University email and create an account while on campus by using the link above and selecting ‘Register’.
