Dr Karen Pearlman's new staff grant funded creative research production 'Woman with an Editing Bench' was recently screened at the Art Gallery of NSW, side by side with the 1929 film that inspired it, 'Man with a Movie Camera'.

In Dr Pearlman's film, in Stalinist Russia, a woman navigates politics, bureaucracy and the impetuous outbursts of collaborators to create something extraordinary despite the odds.

The film was enabled by funding from the Macquarie New Staff Grant program, which helps staff to establish their research profiles.

The screening was part of the gallery's 'Cosmic Futures' series which is continuing until 16 December.

Dr Pearlman said: "I'm delighted to see Vertov's wife Elizaveta Svilova, the 'Woman with an Editing Bench' who is the subject of my short film, finally getting the recognition she deserves!"
