Parking

Car park image

Parking on the Macquarie University campus is limited. Macquarie has over 35,200 students, 2,400 staff, and commercial tenants with hundreds of employees, but only approximately 4,000 car parking spaces available for staff, students and visitors. We allow entry permits to be bought by all students and staff so that our parking space usage is optimised. This means if you purchase an entry permit, you are not guaranteed a parking space, or even necessarily a space close to your destination.

If you are looking for a different mode of travel, Macquarie University is easily accessible by train, bus, bike or walking. To find out more about these other modes of transport, visit the Macquarie University Transport website at http://www.mq.edu.au/transport.

Parking restrictions on campus apply from 6:00am until 8:00pm, 7 days a week.

Parking compliance is enforced under the NSW Road Rules for a Restricted Parking Area. These rules mean that fines and further action can be enforced for any breach of the road or traffic rules within the Macquarie University Campus.

Casual Parking (including Visitor Parking)

Casual entry permits are available to students, staff and members of the public. These are available from ticket dispensing machines located at the following locations:

  • Kerbside Aquatic Centre - 1 hour parking only
  • N1 Carpark - 1 hour parking only
  • N3 Carpark (near Culloden Road)
  • W4 Carpark (south of building W6A)
  • X3 Carpark (south of building X5A)
  • X4 Carpark (south of Banksia Cottage)

Pay and display ticket holders may only park in these carparks and a valid ticket must be displayed on the dashboard.

Casual Parking Fees [PDF]. Note that ticket dispensing machines accept only gold coins or credit cards.

Child Care Permits

Child Care Permits are available free of charge on application to your child care provider. This permit allows a vehicle to park for up to 30 minutes in areas marked 'P30 Minutes Set Down' located near the Child Care Centres.

Note that this permit does NOT allow parking in any other parking areas on campus.

Contractor Permits

Contractor permits are for vehicles involved with building and construction projects.

Each project and principal contractor on the project will receive one contractor's permit. The permit allows a contractor's vehicle to be parked in the general parking areas. It does not guarantee location proximity or a place to park. Contractor's employees, sub-contractors and providers must obtain and display a valid casual entry permit if they wish to park on campus.

Should there be a dedicated contractor's compound for the duration of the project, vehicles parked inside the compound are exempt and do not need to display a valid permit.

All requests for Contractor Permits must be approved by Macquarie University Property.

Dedicated Parking

There are marked parking bays dedicated for use by specific positions, individuals or group(s). Dedicated parking is controlled by means of posted signs and physical barriers such as lockable bollards and/or boom gates.

Disability Parking (including Temporary Permits)

Australian Disability Parking Scheme permits are honoured at Macquarie University. Vehicles displaying these permits may park in specially designated 'disabled only' spaces, or general parking areas at no charge. See Accessibility Map.

Temporary Disability Parking

Students or staff who have a short-term mobility limitation (eg, recent surgery, broken limb) may obtain a 'Temporary Disability' permit for a period of time.  A supporting medical report is required prior to the issue of this permit.  Both a valid University permit and the 'Temporary Disability' permit must be displayed inside the driver's side of the windscreen when parking in a 'disabled only' space.

To apply for a Temporary Disability permit, contact Security Operations Coordinator on 9850 7175 or extension 7175.

Loading and Unloading

There are designated signposted areas that are specifically to be used for the purpose of loading or unloading by University service vehicles, contractors, suppliers or external service providers for a period of 1 hour (60 minutes) or less.  Loading and unloading close to buildings in areas not marked or signposted requires prior  exemption from the Security Operations Coordinator on 9850 7175 or extension 7175.

Lost and/or Stolen Permits

If your permit is lost or stolen, report it immediately to the Security Office in Building C1A.  Contact phone 9850 7112 or ext 7112.  You will need to complete a Lost/Stolen Permit Report and also provide a Statutory Declaration prior to receiving a replacement permit. Replacement permit cost is $40.

Recovered lost or stolen permits must be returned to the Security Office as soon as possible.  Use of a lost or stolen permit by anyone will result in an Infringement Notice being issued.

Motorcycles

Motorcycle parking is provided in specially marked areas throughout the campus.  Motorcycles do not need to pay or obtain entry permits if they park in these designated bays.

Parking Infringements (including Infringement Appeals)

Parking compliance at Macquarie University is enforced under the NSW Road Rules for a Restricted Parking Area. Enforcement of the Restricted Parking Area is managed through the issue of infringements or penalty notices which are processed by the State Debt Recovery Office.

Any driver who violates the University's Traffic and Parking rules (eg, by parking in the wrong area with the wrong kind of permit, and/or contrary to signs) will be issued with an penalty notice in excess of $85. Infringements will include breaches of any of the existing parking restrictions, including parking in reserved and/or special permit areas (generally line marked in yellow) without the correct permit, parking in access lanes/roadways, parking in areas other than marked parking bays, etc.

Any vehicle parked on the campus between 6.00am - 8.00pm, 7 days a week, is required to display either a valid parking Permit or a valid Pay and Display ticket.
